HIV rate up among young gay men in the United States

Diagnoses of HIV and AIDS in men who have sex with men rose significantly from 2001 to 2006, with infection rates increasing by 12.4 percent among males ages 13 to 24.

Because it's not always about fighting for a cause. Sometimes it's just really nice to feel happy and optimistic, even if this state of mind lasts only for a fleeting moment.

Sworn Virgins of Albania

Hat Tip to my friend Andrew for drawing my attention to this fascinating article about the centuries old Albanian tradition of sworn virgins, women who took an oath of virginity so that they could live as men as heads of the family, weapon carriers, and property owners with the ability to move freely in society.

Quite a trade-off.

Obama and France

Check out this New York Times article about the rebirth, due in part to the rise of Barack Obama in the United States, of the négritude ideology of black pride that was conceived in Paris during the 1920s and 30s by Aimé Césaire and Léopold Sédar Senghor.

“Since it abolished slavery 160 years ago, [France] has officially declared itself to be colorblind — but seeing Mr. Obama, a new generation of French blacks is arguing that it’s high time here for precisely the sort of frank discussions that in America have preceded the nomination of a major black candidate.”

Graeme Le Saux, straight athlete fighting homophobia

Check out this interview with Graeme Le Saux, the straight British ex-soccer player who is happily married with two children, but who during his career constantly dodged rumors that he was gay.

It is unfortunate that because Le Saux expressed a lack of enthusiasm for the archetypal British 'footballer' lifestyle, he faced homophobic abuse from opposition fans and other players. Some good did come out of the situation in that he is now an outspoken activist for Gay Rights in soccer.

Happy Father's Day Graeme!

And Happy Father's Day to all daddies, including the one at Daddy, Papa, and Me, a fellow blogger who chronicles the interesting life of an "unconventional family in today's world."

Ciao, for now.

Gay weddings in Greece

Nice news.

Greece's first gay weddings were held on Tuesday when two couples, one gay and one lesbian, tied the knot on the Aegean island of Tilos. While Greek civil law does not specify gender in matrimony, the couples and the local mayor nonetheless face the threat of criminal charges and the wrath of the Orthodox church.

Let's hear it for the wedding and for standing up for basic human rights!
