'White' Canadian Idol?

Just an observation...Because when you're of color, sometimes you notice things that other people don't.

Two weeks ago, Mila Miller, a black Canadian woman was the first top ten finalist eliminated from Canadian Idol.

Last week, Khalila Glanville, another black Canadian woman, was the next to go.

This week, Martha Joy Lim, a Portuguese-Filipina Canadian was sent packing.

Hmmm.

What does all this mean? I'm not sure, but I suspect it's complex, simple, surprising, or predictable depending on who you are.

There are at least two possible explanations. Either people of colour can't sing or Canadians who vote for "Idol" are rednecks.

I love Martha Joy! So sad to see her go.

I'm glad you had the courage to post this because the the thought entered my mind as well. What people don't know is that the producers of the show can over ride the votes and that is why they will never disclose who the distribution of votes. Don't forget Matt Rapley who is black was in the bottom with Martha.

This is a serious reflection of the Canadian population in general if the voting is in fact legitimate. It's as if the people who vote in mutliculturally mandated Canada are secretly and anonymously voicing their racism as a form of backlash against open federal immigration policies.

Canadians, in general, i.e. white Canadians, have no interest in seeing a Canadian Idol of colour, that is unless he or she sings ten times better (not just better) than a white person. We people of colour have to be outstanding to succeed, not just as good as the white people.

Its nice you made the observation BUT this is the REASON I NEVER watch Canadian Idol. Canada is a too racist. The racism in Canada is more subtle though. At least in America there have been TWO black American Idol winners. In Canada that's NEVER going to happen. But you know what. It doesn't even matter because Canadian Idol is WHACK. You can only sell 50,000 or 100,000 CDs in Canada. The albums are NOT released internationally. American Idol is the BETTER show. Canadian Idol is like a novelty act you CANNOT REALLY become a big star. I say if you want to become a famous singer GO SOUTH of the border.

Your question is an important one, but your conclusion is precipitated. I think it's necessary to be aware of differences associated with ethnicity (and other dimensions) to make sure we don't use them as a basis for irrational judgement (one manifestation of which is racism). At the same time, automatically saying that the elimination of 'colour' people from Canadian Idol was racially determined verges on victimisation, and this only fuels a vicious circle. A vicious circle that says that cultural differences create complicated problems, rather than open new opportunities.

For Wool Jam "...A vicious circle that says that cultural differences create complicated problems, rather than open new opportunities cultural differences create complicated problems, rather than open new opportunities."

Strange logic here. "Complicated problems" and "new opportunites" are not mutually exclusive or even in circular opposition. Problems are complicated, and they often come with new opportunities. Nothing vicious, nor circular about that.

The person that runs this blog posted a serious question and an honest one. Some people just refuse to see racism for what it really is. Racism isn't just in your face often racism is COVERT.

And Canadian Idol is a perfect example of COVERT RACISM. You got that Ben Mulroney born with a silver spoon in his mouth the host of the show. Mulroney's dad is one of the reasons Canada's economy went down a while back.

Next, the Canadian media OF COURSE will ignore the issue of racism on Canadian Idol because they don't care either. A black Canadian or Asian Canadian or Native Canadian HAVE NEVER WON Canadian Idol. I remember a black girl Toya Alexis she was an AMAZING talent but I guess Toya was just too black. Thank goodness for American Idol where Sanjaya can SHINE, where other young singers of colour can shine. I DOUBT Fantasia or Rubin would win Canadian Idol because they would be TOO BLACK.

Canadian Idol is marketed and gearef towards WHITE CANADIAN YOUTH. Your argument is so lame and tired. Canadian Idol is racist and its obvious. The show is geared towards white youth. It doesn't matter though because you CANNOT become a star on Canadian Idol its such a joke. Who cares if you go gold or platinum here or if you do a cross Canada tour? The fame simply isn't big enough. Americans don't care about Canadian Idol. The Canadian Idol CDs are NOT released in the USA or internationally. I mean Canadian Idol is a joke.
