Survivor: Nate and Brad

When African-American Survivor: Cook Islands contestant Nathan (Nate) Gonzalez referred to his gay Asian-American teammate Brad Virata as a "Nancy boy," what was he thinking? On a show that began the season by dividing the competitors into ethnic groups, I wonder what questions came up in the minds of viewers when the remark was made?

Here are some of mine:

Did sexual orientation have anything to do with Nate's comment?
Did ethnicity have anything to do with Nate's comment?
Is calling someone "Nancy" a misogynous affront?
Was the whole incident created to incite viewer discussion?

While some critics have dismissed the scheme of segregating ethnicities as a pure publicity stunt, one thing is certain. People are talking about Nate's comment within the broader context of discrimination, and this in itself is one step towards battling any kind of intolerance.

Haha...Brad is a cutie. :P I think Nate was referring to Brad being gay? In a derogatory term...tsktsk.

Yeah, but I wonder if Nate would refer to everyone, including his best buddies, as "Nancy boys" when he's pissed at them. Still a homophobic remark, misogynous too, but less personal.

Brad is such a sweetie too. I almost wonder if Nate is a closet gay and has a crush on him? It might explain why Nate seems so threatened.

The "nancy boy" comment, in addition to some of Nate's other slurs like, "punk" and "bitch" was very homophobic. I think Nate is really insecure about his own sexuality and he's projecting his hate onto Brad.

brad never disclosed his sexual orientation on the show so i dont think that nate was talking about him being gay. he probably just thought he was acting like a girl. and if gay men get offended by people comparing them to nacy boys(girls) then they shouldnt act like it and if they do act a certain way then they shouldnt get mad about someone calling them out on it. nate was just stating the obvious. brad should have done the swimming part no questions ask...and he he didnt. so i really think nate was talking about brads lack of character more so then sexual orientation

To "hi,"
Brad, in fact, did come out to his teammates on the show, but that part was edited out for some reason by CBS. He discusses his whole coming out story to them in an interview with AfterElton.com. I discuss it in my post of 13 November.

Hi said if he doesn't like being called a girl stop acting like one. This is internalized homophobia, what makes feminine behavior better than masculine? In the gay community there is discrimination against people who can't pass. No one wants to talk about passing for straight, but effeminate men are looked down on by gays who think they are butch. So what? Give it some thought, it really doesn't matter, it says nothing about anyones character, they just happen to act like a girl. With all the real problems in the world this should cause so much hate? But it does. When people talk about "negative" stereotypes what they mean is effimanacy. This has nothing to do with swimming and everything to do with homophobia.
